  • Workshop Descriptions

    • This workshop will focus on various parts of the inquest process including initial investigation, communicating with families, working with a medical examiner’s office, completing death certificates, and reporting. The student will be able to:

      • Identify the major steps in an inquest process;
      • Apply best practices for death investigation;
      • List proper death certificate and reporting processes; and
      • Utilize technology to access resources and identify helpful information. 
    • Did you ever want to know the secrets of a dead person? Learn how the analysis of a body can tell you what injuries a person sustained, when they died, and their cause of death. With this workshop, the Texas State University Forensic Anthropology Center teaches how examining a person’s bones, decomposition, and environment can unlock the secrets of their life and death. 

    • A co-hosted workshop with the Texas Center for the Judiciary, Texas Municipal Courts Education Center, and the Texas Association of Counties that covers issues related to DWI offenses impacting all levels of the judiciary. Topics will include blood search warrants, bond conditions, occupational licenses petitions, and ignition interlock devices. The student will be able to:

      • Apply information received to practices and procedures in the court.
      • Understand impaired driving statutory and case law updates. 
      • Recognize and order proper and/or mandatory bond conditions for impaired driving offenses. 
      • Utilize technology to access legal resources.
      • Discuss legal options to reduce recidivism in impaired driving cases. 
    • This 10-hour interactive workshop at Baylor Law School will include simulation, discussion, and lecture regarding criminal trial procedures. Judges will attend courses about judicial demeanor, jury selection, examination of witnesses, issues in jury deliberations, and judgments. The student will be able to: 

      • Identify the procedures for the various stages of criminal trials; 
      • Discuss common issues that may arise in criminal trials; 
      • Apply best practices to the processing of criminal trials; and 
      • Utilize technology to access resources and identify helpful information.
